Sleep Apnea -What is it And How To Diagnose?

Sleep apnea is one of the most serious sleep disorders. It causes them to stop and start breathing unconsciously and repeatedly. If a person snores loudly and feels tired even after a sound sleep, then there are chances that the person may be suffering from sleep apnea.

Your healthcare provider can evaluate the symptoms based on your sleep history and other movements recorded while asleep. These problems can be diagnosed with the help of a sleep partner. You can also visit a sleep disorder center where sleep specialists can help determine your issues. To get further help from the specialists, you can consult Valhalla sleep apnea and get treated.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a serious disorder that causes irregular breathing in a person while he is asleep.

The main types of Sleep apnea diagnosed in most patients are:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

It is more common as compared to other types and occurs when the throat muscles block the flow of air into the lungs by relaxing.

  • Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea.

It is also known as complex sleep apnea. This happens when a person receiving treatment for OSA gets diagnosed with CSA.

  • Central sleep apnea (CSA)

This type of sleep apnea occurs due to the improper functioning of the brain. When the patient’s brain cannot signal properly to the muscles that control breathing, the person suffers from CSA.

What are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

There are various visible symptoms observed in the person that can help them to diagnose sleep apnea. Some of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea are:

  1. Gasping for air during sleep as if someone is blocking the person’s breathing.
  2. Loud snoring can disturb others’ sleep.
  3. Episodes in which the patient stops breathing in the sleep.
  4. Difficulty staying asleep. This problem is also called insomnia.
  5. Awakening with a dry mouth.
  6. Morning headache.
  7. Excessive daytime sleepiness. This issue is also called hypersomnia.
  8. Difficulty in focusing and concentrating while the person is awake.
  9. Irritability.

When should you visit a doctor?

If you have witnessed any of these symptoms and are facing difficulty in carrying out your daily tasks efficiently, then you must visit a doctor. However, before visiting a doctor, you can ask someone in your family or your friends to sleep with you and observe what symptoms you are suffering from. They can help diagnose properly by reporting to the doctor the symptoms they have observed.
