A Quick Guide to Taking Care of Your Braces

Braces are excellent orthodontic devices that help correct teeth-related problems like crowding, crooked teeth, underbite, overbite, misaligned teeth, malocclusions, open bites, etc. They aim to straighten and align the teeth following the person’s bite. As a result of constant pressure and force on the teeth by braces, the teeth gradually conform to the stress and move into the desired position.

Even though the physical aspect of teeth can be fixed through braces, it is essential to maintain oral hygiene to avoid future complications. It is advised to take proper hygiene care to prevent tooth decay, bad breath, or other mouth problems. Taking care of oral hygiene is indeed more time-consuming and difficult with braces, but the time and effort put into it are worth it.

A cosmetic dentist in Wichita Falls ensures you get the right dental services and guidance to take care of your oral health. There are several ways one can take care of their braces and maintain oral hygiene.

  • Table of Contents

    • Brushing teeth
    • Flossing
    • Choosing a good toothpaste
    • Diet
    • Regular visits

    Brushing teeth

To remove food debris and bacteria from the teeth and gums, one should brush their teeth and rinse their mouth after every meal. The toothbrush should be soft-bristled to ensure no damage to the braces. It is recommended to change the toothbrush every two to three months.

  • Flossing

Flossing once a day should be included in the daily schedule as it helps dislodge the remaining food particles between the teeth or braces. One must select a floss that the orthodontist prescribes. The floss should be suitable for braces and not just for regular teeth.

  • Oral Irrigator

A water flosser or oral irrigator is another efficient device to make hygiene easier with braces.

The pressurized water helps in thoroughly cleaning the interdental space and dislodging the remaining food from the braces. They are also less time-consuming and easier to navigate than regular floss.

  • Choosing a good toothpaste

Picking the best toothpaste goes a long way in maintaining dental health. The right toothpaste would have all the essential ingredients to clean the teeth and protect them. It should not be too harsh either.

  • Diet

Wisely choosing the diet is very important. One must consult the orthodontist and eat the foods recommended by them. It is generally advised to avoid harsh and sugary meals. Food items like popcorn, jellybeans, caramel, and taffy are a big NO. They are likely to get stuck in the braces and cause tooth decay.

  • Regular visits

One must make regular appointments with the orthodontist to make sure that they can monitor your teeth’s health and suggest solutions if something is wrong.
