Ways To Tell If You Have Gum Disease

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a condition in which the gums become inflamed and infected. This illness can be painful and humiliating, but many people are unaware they have it until the symptoms become severe. Advanced gum disease can’t be cured; it can only be treated. Paying attention to the top five indications of Monterey gum disease is one of the greatest ways to catch it early, and if you experience symptoms, see your dentist right away.

Table of Contents

  • 1.  Swollen gums
  • 2.  Bleeding gums
  • 3.  Bad breath
  • 4. Sensitive or delicate gums
  • 5. Painful gums

1.  Swollen gums

Gingivitis is a kind of gum disease characterized by swollen, red gums. This is generally an indication that plaque has built up on your teeth and has started to harden. If your dentist suspects you have gingivitis, they may be able to diagnose you with a deep cleaning or antibiotic medication. However, ignoring your symptoms for an extended period can lead to periodontitis, resulting in tooth loss and infection in other body parts.

2.  Bleeding gums

Can you see blood on your toothbrush when you floss or brush your teeth? Bleeding while brushing or flossing can be an early indicator of gum disease, believe it or not. Bacteria can spread through your gums and affect the bone structure in your jaw if left untreated. A good thumb rule is to notify your dentist when you notice blood. Before it is too late, early therapies can help you get things in check.

3.  Bad breath

Bad breath that lasts more than two weeks may indicate gum disease. Food particles can remain in your mouth if you do not floss and brush your teeth thoroughly daily. These foods will feed mouth bacteria, leading to bad breath and plaque buildup. This plaque can irritate your gums and promote the spread of gum disease. Bad breath is usually one of the few symptoms of gum disease.

4. Sensitive or delicate gums

When your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold foods, this could be due to sensitive teeth. It can, however, be an indication of gum disease. When gum disease occurs, the gums become inflamed. This can cause teeth to protrude outwards, resulting in heat or cold sensitivity. At each visit, discuss any tooth or gum sensitivity you may be experiencing with your dentist.

5. Painful gums

It is possible to have gum disease without experiencing any pain, but severe cases of gum disease usually result in soreness. If your gums become sensitive or painful to the touch after flossing or brushing, you may have plaque buildup. However, if you can explain the source of the pain, including a piece of food embedded in your gums, there may be no need for concern.

Gum disease is a severe ailment with long-term health implications. If you experience any of these indications, visit your dentist. Early recognition and diagnosis are critical for avoiding more severe problems in the future. Call Perio & Implant Centers of Monterey Bay or book an appointment online to have your gums evaluated and treated as soon as possible.
