Recurrent miscarriages and what to do about them

Recurrent miscarriages and what to do about them

Getting pregnant is one of the greatest feelings a couple looking to start a family can get. This should, however, not fool you into thinking the hard part is over as it has just begun. A pregnant woman must incorporate newer lifestyle changes to accommodate the fetus growing inside them. If not taken into consideration, these changes and other factors may result in a miscarriage. Happening once may be unlikely, but a New York recurrent miscarriage may indicate an underlying issue. More about recurring miscarriages are discussed below.

What are Recurrent miscarriages?

A growing fetus that has not developed beyond twenty-four weeks of pregnancy has not grown enough to survive and may be lost via a miscarriage. This loss has not resulted from surgical or medical termination like an abortion.

Recurrent miscarriages can be defined as the loss of two miscarriages even though there has been a fruitful one. This is when your physician may recommend screening tests to check on various abnormalities or conditions that may be the root cause.

Many pregnancies end up in miscarriages; therefore, even one miscarriage may warrant further analysis. Finding out the root cause can also be a challenging task.

The likelihood of you having a recurrent miscarriage is not high, but that does not mean it can not happen.

Causes

Half of the cases of recurrent miscarriages have no defined cause. The other half have reasons that are among the following:

  •         Cervical inefficiency causes it to open too early. This causes late miscarriages as the cervix is only supposed to open during labor to let the baby through.
  •         Issues with the pregnant woman’s uterus like womb inflammation, an underlying infection, or scarring of the womb lining may result in them losing their baby
  •         Abnormalities with the clotting system of the patient, like factor V Leiden deficiency, may increase the likelihood of blood clots occurring, causing a miscarriage
  •         Antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by abnormally clotting blood-forming unwanted blood clots in the woman’s blood vessels. This inhibits the supply of blood to the baby via the placenta.
  •         Certain lifestyles like regular drinking of excess alcohol, smoking, or being overweight may increase the risk factors of miscarriages
  •         Insufficient hormones that are required for pregnancy may cause miscarriages. Low thyroid hormone levels may affect the levels of those hormones necessary for pregnancy. Early stages of pregnancy with low progesterone levels may affect how the fetus is implanted in the uterus.

Treatment Options

  •         Taking blood-thinning drugs during future pregnancies
  •         Adopting better lifestyle changes for the growing baby
  •         Correcting womb abnormalities to decrease the risk of more miscarriages. Weakened cervixes may be dealt with by a stitch when commencing pregnancy.
  •         Supplements of progesterone hormone early after conceiving to enhance implantation
  •         Consultation by a genetic specialist via pre-implantation genetic diagnosis

Pregnancy is a delicate topic to deal with as it involves matters concerning life and death. Regular visits to your physician may come in handy when detecting any underlying problems affecting your pregnancy.
