5 Frequently Asked Questions About Concussion

Do you participate in sports and recreational activities? If yes, you might have come along with your teammates, or you are asserting that they are not feeling right after a blow or jolt to the head. These may be the signs that you are suffering from a concussion. A concussion San Diego has become one of the health issues that have troubled many people in the region. Since most of them are unaware of the issue, the following are some of 5 frequent questions they ask when they visit a clinic.

1. What causes a concussion?

Your brain is made of soft tissues cushioned by spinal fluid and encased in a shielding shell of the skull. The following are some of the common causes and risk factors.

  1.    Inadequate safety gears for contact sports
  2.    Falls mainly or children and older adults
  3.    Car and bicycle accidents
  4.    Physical abuse and being struck with an object
  5.    What are the signs and symptoms of a concussion?

Some signs and symptoms last for some time, while others are long-lasting. Signs and symptoms can be physical, mental, or emotional, including the following.

  •         Sluggishness
  •         Headache
  •         Memory loss
  •         Fatigue
  •         Depression
  •         Loss of consciousness

2. Do concussions occur to kids?

Since children’s heads are unduly larger than other parts of the body, a concussion mainly happens in young kids. When entering the adolescent stage, they encounter short height and weight gain. These two factors put them at greater risk of concussion than adults.

If your kid has a concussion, you should watch them for the first day. Ensure you do not give them medication like aspirin as they may lead to bleeding. Also, ensure you monitor their behavioral changes since they cannot notice what they are feeling.

3. What Are the Different Types of Concussions?

They are grouped into three grades:

  1. Grade 1: mild concussion with signs and symptoms that last below 15 minutes with no loss of consciousness
  2. Grade 2: moderate with signs that persist for more than 15 minutes and no loss of consciousness

      3. Grade 3: Severe where you lose consciousness for some seconds

     4. How Can I Prevent Concussions at Home?

If you are afraid of being hospitalized, your doctor may give you guidelines to follow. You should seek medical attention if the symptoms persist. Some of the home remedies include:

Taking a Break

If the concussion occurred while participating in athletic activity, you should stop and sit out. This is because your brain requires some time to heal; thus, resting is vital.

Safeguard Against Repeat Concussion

Experiencing a series of concussions can be devastating and may be accompanied by fatal consequences such as brain swelling, long-lasting disabilities, or even death. Therefore, you should avoid going back to normal activities if you still have some signs.

Wear Defensive Equipment

If you are participating in high-contact activities like football, boxing, and hockey, ensure you wear equipment such as headgears, padding, and mouth guards.

If you have tried different home remedies without success, you should visit your doctor for checkups. What if your doctor is fully booked? What will you do?
